One
of the most exciting times of our annual church calendar is our missions convention.
And this year was the same! Why do we have a convention? Here are my resons for
thinking that we should take three weeks out of our year to focus our attention
on spreading God's fame.
1.
As just said, it focuses our attention on spreading God's fame. The work of God
is the original global enterprise. And it is easy to become absorbed in our little
corner of the world.
2.
It brings a revival spirit to our church. I think this happens because we become
re-aligned with one of the things most on God's heart His glory in redemption.
3.
A window of calling opens. Countless missionaries through the centuries were awakened
to God's call on their lives during a time of special prayer and preaching concerning
missions.
4.
It increases our giving to missions. Money isn't everything, but we live in a
world in which it is something!
5.
This one is very personal I just like missions work! Every church should
be a missionary church, not just some that are considered elite. Every pastor
should be a missionary pastor, and not just a few that like to travel.
Pastor
Jeff
Our
annual Missions Convention began Sunday morning, February 20th, 2005, with a message
from Pastor Jeff Stanfill specifically for Covenant about what God's calling
to us means.
At
the evening service, Pastor Dylan Schultz of Resurrection Life, an inner-city
ministry in Baton Rouge, preached as he shared about this ministry, with which
Covenant partners. Members of Resurrection Life shared testimonies of God's grace.
On
February 27th, Missionary/Evangelist Dr. Doyle Jones was our guest at both
services. Dr. Jones has served as a pastor, educator, and missionary. While ministering
in many areas of the world, much of his work has been in Latin America. His missionary
efforts have been in establishing local churches through an evangelistic ministry
which emphasizes the miraculous.
Pastor
Tom Bassford, who serves a congregation in Kansas which has also heard the
call to unreached people groups, preached at the morning service on March 6th.
Introduced to us via Wycliffe, Pastor Bassford shared Trinity Fellowship's journey
thus far in Bible translating and serving an adopted village in the Philippines.
Our
International Missions Banquet, "Around the
World in 80 Minutes", on the evening of
March 6th concluded the 2005 Missions Convention.
That's right! We went 'around the world' in little
more than an hour! We took a virtual tour of the
various missionaries and missions projects with
which we have partnered throughout the world. We
'visited' countries far and wide, heard the latest
reports on what God is doing abroad, and enjoyed
the taste of foods from various parts of the world.
This has been an annual favorite (as are all the
eating times at Covenant!). We celebrated over food,
fellowship, and the Word of God as a church family.
